Unlike modern mills, Barkley’s Mill preserves the 100% naturally robust flavor and nutrition of our grits by slowly stone-grinding our seed on our hydro-powered gristmill. The heat generated by this slow grinding process is greatly reduced; therefore, you’re guaranteed to get everything you want and need from every spoonful of our grits. Furthermore, each ear of heirloom corn is hand-selected for quality, so we can always hold true to our promise of mouth-watering goodness!
So glad you asked! We have a full history and description on our gourmet grits on the Grits & Seeds page right over here.
Our mouth-watering "Stoned Happy Grits!" are made from gourmet quality heirloom, non-GMO, gluten free, pesticide-free, chemical-free, and germination certified Hickory King Dent white corn seeds. To bring you this quality, we pride ourselves in always practicing sustainable farming methods. We also promise to only stone-grind the corn seed that we grow on Southern Cross Farm at Barkley’s Mill; therefore, both of our gluten free and non-GMO promises will never be compromised. However, we are not yet certified as Organic.
Our heirloom gourmet stone ground white corn grits are expertly packaged right on the mill property on Southern Cross Farm; we're located in western North Carolina. We pull the grits out of their 0 (zero) degree Fahrenheit freezer and place them in a high-quality cloth bag, pack them securely, and ship them directly to you and your family.
We would love to hear from you and taste your down-home grits recipes firsthand. For any of our customers, friends and neighbors or anyone with a tasty recipe to share, please email your request to email@example.com.
We owe the credit to all of the incredible images of our mill, our farm, and our life to photographer Keaton Edwards.
Our dear farm dogs are named Brooklyn, Bonnie ,Greta, and Bessie Mae. Yes, we have goats and chickens, a cat here and there are a few the guineas.
At Barkley’s Mill our methods are well researched, time-honored, old-fashioned, and carefully practiced.
We’ve gone back to gourmet quality heirloom white corn in order to find a truly robust natural flavor to delight your palate. In order to preserve the natural flavor and heirloom nature of our corn to its fullest we’ve gone through the process of growing our own seed corn. We’ve also arranged and plowed our own fields in a way to allow for open or natural pollination while preventing cross-pollination from other varieties of corn or other vegetables.
Once our corn reaches maturity, we harvest and shuck it in one step. Next we use a traditional corn crib to naturally dry our corn. After the Corn has dried, we inspect it by hand to protect the quality of corn we stone-grind and shell it before grinding. For our complete story of our milling methods please visit the page Our Methods on this website.
